Disability Access Guide

The Princess Gwenllian Centre is a Community / Sports Centre that is owned and operated by Kidwelly Town Community Hall, a charitable trust registered with the Charity Commission at number 1072181.

Thsi document provides guidance for potential users of the Centre who may experience accessibility issues. It is current as of 10th September 2023.

Location

This venue is situated in Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire.
The venue is situated outside the centre of the city.
The venue is not situated on a road which has a steep gradient. There is a bus stop within 300m of the venue.
The nearest mainline station is Kidwelly, which is approximately 500m along level ground.

Venue Car Park

The venue has its own car park.

Parking is free for all users.

The car park is located at the side and rear of the building.

The car park type is open air/surface.

There is an overspill car park on land adjoining the centre, ground surface is rough.

Parking spaces for Blue Badge holders do not need to be booked in advance.

There are 3 Blue Badge parking bays within the car park.

The dimensions of the Blue Badge parking bay(s) are 360cm x 500cm.

The nearest Blue Badge bay is approximately 20m from the main entrance. The furthest Blue Badge bay is approximately 30m from the main entrance.

The route from the car park to the entrance is accessible to a wheelchair user without assistance.

There are very shallow slopes/ramps. The car park surface is tarmac.
There is not a road to cross between the car park and the entrance.

The car park does not have a height restriction barrier.

Level Change (Main Entrance)

This information is for the entrance located to the front of the building. There is level access into the venue.
There is a level access to the Main Entrance

The main doors open away from you (push).
The doors are double.

The doors are light to medium weight.
The width of a single door opening is approximately 90cm.

Outside Access (Side Entrance)

This information is for the entrance located to the side of the building. The entrance is primarily a Fire Exit, but is open whenever the building is occupied.

There is a very shallow ramp providing access into the venue.
The door(s) open(s) towards you (pull).
The doors are double.

The doors are light.
The width of the door opening is approximately 90cm.

Outside Access (Rear Entrance)

This information is for the entrance located to the rear of the building. There is not level access into the venue. There is a single step up to the door approximately 15cm high.
The main door opens towards you (pull) from the outside.

The door is secured by a keycode access point to the left of the entrance.
The door is single.

The doors is light.
The width of the door opening is approximately 90cm.

Inside Access

There is level access to the service(s).
There is not a hearing assistance system.
This venue does not play background music.
Motorised scooters are allowed in public parts of the venue. The lighting levels are medium.

Additional Fire Exits

Fire exits are found in Reception (x2), Function Room, Main Hall (x1 to right, x3 to left), Rear of Building.

Each fire exit has level (or very shallow ramp) to egress, except for the single Rear Entrance/Exit, which has a step on the outside, approximately 15cm high.

The following information is for the Reception area, and Main Hall which both provide may refreshments and light food on a temporary basis.

Food or drinks can be ordered from the service counter.

Lift Access to First Floor

There is lift access to the first floor, providing access to the Loft Room only.

Lift provides capacity for 1 wheelchair user.

The lift is available internally, from the Function Room on the ground floor.

Accessible Toilet (Front of Building)

Accessible toilet facilities are available on the Ground Floor at the front of the building, and also the Rear of the building. There is an additional Accessible Toilet upstairs in the Loft Room.

Location and Access

The toilet is not for the sole use of disabled people. There is pictorial signage on or near the toilet door.

This accessible toilet is approximately 5m from the main entrance.

The accessible toilet is located to the left as you enter. There is level access to this accessible toilet.

Features and Dimensions

This is a unisex toilet.
A key is not required for the accessible toilet. The door opens outwards (pull).
The door is locked by a locking handle.

The width of the accessible toilet door is 85cm. The door is light.

The dimensions of the accessible toilet are 160cm x 180cm.

There is insufficient turning space in the cubicle for a wheelchair user.
The tap type is lever.

There is a mixer tap.

There is an emergency alarm.

The emergency pull cord alarm is not fully functional.

The alarm was out of reach (higher than 10cm from floor) when surveyed.

Disposal facilities are not available in the cubicle.
There is a/are open waste paper bin and sanitary disposal units. There is not a/are not coat hook(s).

Position of Fixtures

Wall mounted grab rails are available for the toilet.
As you face the toilet the wall-mounted grab rails are on both sides. There is not a shelf within the accessible toilet.

The door is locked by a sliding bolt.
The width of the accessible toilet door is 80cm. The door is light.

The dimensions of the accessible toilet are 210cm x 240cm.

This accessible toilet includes a shower cubicle.

The shower controls are low level (approx 40cm from the ground).

The shower head bar is placed too high (approx 160cm from the ground).

There is sufficient turning space in the cubicle for a wheelchair user. There is a lateral transfer space.
As you face the toilet pan the transfer space is on the right.
The lateral transfer space is 150cm.

There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.

There is a flush on the transfer side.

Availability and Location of Standard Toilets

Standard toilet facilities are available at the front of the building, off the main Reception Hall.

There are additional Standard Toilets to the rear of the venue, in addition to Male and Female Changing / Shower rooms.

Changing / Shower Rooms

These facilities are found at the rear of the venue, behind the Main Sports Hall.

Changing Rooms feature wall mounted benches and hooks for clothing.

Shower Rooms feature 3 shower cubicles in each.

The Changing Rooms and Shower Rooms are not designed as accessible facilities.

Access to Standard Female and Male Toilet(s)

Lighting levels are medium.

There is level access to the standard toilets throughout.

Additional Information

Documents can not be requested in Braille.
Documents can be requested in large print.
A bowl of water can be provided for an assistance dog.
No members of staff are trained in British Sign Language (BSL) skills.
